Overview

In this project case study, I will be discussing a final group project in which my teammates and I were extensively involved throughout the entire process, including surveying, researching, and prototyping. My primary focus was on designing the parents' screens and ensuring consistency in the project through the effective use of components.

Throughout the design process, our main objective was to address real communication challenges between kindergarten teachers and parents, with a founder-as-a-parent perspective. I'm proud to share that our project received the Best UX/UI Final Project Award.

Challenges

  • Children stay 7-9 hours at the kindergarten

  • While the teachers are so busy all the time, the parents cannot get how their children’s day was like.

Did they eat well? Did they take a good nap? Why are my children so grumpy?

  • If there is a white board at the kindergarten for sharing information, parents would have to always check the board every time they attend the kindergarten. Miscommunication happens daily.

Parents:

“I do not see my children most of the day. It is very important that I know how their days went. I wish the communication with the teachers could be better.

Teachers:

“I would love to share more with the parents if time allows. I am trying my best.”

Survey and Research

Communication is just "not enough"

What are our competitors good at?

In competitor analysis, we discovered various methods used for classroom communication between teachers and parents. Kindergartens typically utilize emails, internal portals, or online platforms like Weebly, while parents often rely on WhatsApp.

In the realm of mobile applications, we explored options such as Class Dojo and Brightwheel in the US, examining their features and visual design for inspiration.

What features shall we consider for the MVP? What are the Must-have?

Daily updates, instant chat, reports, sharing of photos/videos, encouragement corner, allocation of assignments, and bill payments etc.

Addressing to the pain points, this is our hypothesis statement:

We believe by creating an app that allows teachers to deliver daily updates of the children will bring a closer connection between teachers and parents. We know that we are right when parents are well-informed and the teachers would not have to spend so much time on updating.

Outcome

What would be the next steps?

Winning the best project was a significant achievement for us following the UX/UI course. This experience underscored the importance of collaboration in design projects.

Looking ahead, I see opportunities for further improvement. Conducting more extensive research by surveying kindergartens in the target launch areas would provide valuable insights. Communication between teachers and parents is a critical topic, especially considering the potential for additional features to be added to the product. With the possibility of remote communication becoming more prevalent post-pandemic, it's essential to understand the perspectives of real users and adapt accordingly.
